Writing Prompt
Write about a time you were faced with a difficult decision to make. What was it about? What did you decide to do? Are you still happy with the decision you made? Please answer in at least 10 sentences.
EXAMPLES
I decided that since I really wanted these boots, I would save my change in a change jar until I had until money to buy them. About six months later I was ready to buy the boots! I am still happy with the decision I made because I still have the boots, years later, and since I used spare change, it didn’t seem like I was wasting money.
EXAMPLES
- join a sports team or club
- tell an adult about a personal issue of yours or a friend you are worried about
- apply to GCIT
- go somewhere you know isn't safe
- where to live (divorce, family options, etc.)
- what clothes/shoes to buy/wear (picture day, first day of school, Halloween, dance, etc.)
- tell a friend/family member a secret
- buy something

Example
Have you ever read a story or watched a movie that had a significant subplot? Would the story or movie be totally different if the subplot was taken out? In the story “Flowers for Algernon” there is a significant subplot that is about Algernon.
This subplot strengthened the story as it helped readers predict and understand what was happening with the main character Charlie. At the beginning of the story Algernon had the brain surgery to make him smarter prior to Charlie. Readers were able to then see that he was getting smart after the surgery as he completed the maze even faster than before the surgery.
Towards the end of the story Charlie writes in his progress report, “As I review the records and data on Algernon, I see that although he is still in his physical infancy, he regressed mentally” (Keyes 57). This shows that Charlie noticed that Algernon was starting to lose his high intelligence. Readers could predict that this was most likely going to happen with Charlie.
In conclusion, the subplot of Algernon played a significant role in “Flowers for Algernon” because readers were able to predict what was going to happen to Charlie.
